Two neighbouring towns just northeast of Calgary were thrust into mourning Sunday as word trickled out about a head-on collision that killed four locals and left seven others seriously injured.
Former Carbon fire chief Ian Appleyard, Carbon Grocery and Liquor Outlet store owner Robert Lyle Duncan, and Moon Kyu (Jeff) Song, a Mac's convenience store clerk from Three Hills, were all killed in the Saturday crash.
Song's 31/2-year-old son, Sion, died Sunday afternoon at Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.
Seven others, including five members of the Carbon Lions Club, were sent to hospital.
"This is a huge loss in a little community like Carbon," said Mayor Guss Nash of the village of 500. "There's a big hole in the hearts of Carbonites today."
Duncan's 21-year-old daughter Virginia, Appleyard's wife Sharon, school teacher Dana Graff, carpet layer Charlie Pears, and Kelly Steen, all of Carbon, were also returning home from a curling club fundraiser in Three Hills when the accident occurred around 10:15 p.m., eight kilometres south of Three Hills on Highway 21.
The towns are roughly 30 kilometres apart and residents in both areas are known to frequently travel back and forth.
Carbon Lions Club president Brent Pears, whose uncle was injured in the crash, said the group is devastated at the loss of two of their most senior and well-respected members.
"There's a group of older guys in the club, and they were close," he said. "It's a very tight group, and Ian and Lyle were a couple of pillars of our community."
The group was tending bar at the fundraiser and had just left the Three Hills Curling Club after a shift. Several other Lions Club members from Carbon took over from the group and worked the late shift, said Pears.
Mounties in Three Hills said the southbound minivan carrying the Lions Club members pulled out to pass a semi when it collided with a northbound car being driven by Song.
Appleyard, 48, Duncan, 53, and Jeff Song, 32, died at the scene.
"(Duncan and Appleyard) are going to be sorely missed by the whole community. They're hell of a nice guys," said Pears of his friends. "It's a hard day for Carbon."
Co-workers at the Three Hills Mac's store said coming to work Sunday without Song was difficult.
"He was just an amazing man -- a very sensitive, sweet soul," said Wanda Janz. "You know that saying: 'He wouldn't hurt a fly?' That was Jeff."
Song's wife, Rachel Lee, suffered broken bones and bruises in the collision.
Jung Hee Hong, a relative of family's from Korea, was taken to hospital.
Police said the survivors' injuries aren't considered life-threatening.
Janz said Song moved to Three Hills, 130 kilometres northeast of Calgary, about a year ago.
He attended the Prairie Bible Institute and was "trying to master English."
Song planned to attend the University of Calgary, said Janz.
Funeral arrangements for the four are being planned.
Nash said the village of Carbon may organize a public memorial.
